Victoria, British Columbia:
You'll Find Peace And Tranquillity...
At This Ten Acre Escape

By Jane Cassie

Although not viewing the pounding Pacific or a sandy beach, the quiet seclusion and natural beauty of this great escape makes it every bit as romantic. Nestled into its rural hillside, the English-style Tudor is bordered by towering firs and flowering perennials. A lazy hammock overlooking a trout pond waits for couples to cuddle in. A golf tee and Bocci ball are set up for guests to enjoy. Pathways leading to mossy bluff lookouts are inviting to stroll and explore. There is an immediate sense of peace and tranquillity in this haven, which is idyllicaly removed from the hustle and bustle of city-life routines. The Markham House is a perfect retreat...even during the fall and winter months!

A wagging tail and two big brown eyes welcomed us to The Markham House. Virgil, the silent protector and resident pooch, led the way to the masters and hosts, Lyall and Sally, who graciously gave us a tour. Soft earth tones compliment an eclectic array of antiques and fine furnishings that have all been put together with an obvious flair for decor. The guest lounge accesses a covered verandah viewing the trout pond where afternoon tea may be enjoyed. On cooler nights, we could imagine cozying in front of a blazing fire in the old English-style living room. Fresh cut flowers and dried bouquets throughout the home provide that special touch. Paned windows view perennial gardens and the massive fir trees, which so conveniently provide the wonderful seclusion and tranquillity. In the main house, there are three guest accommodations all with private baths. Each is unique, well- appointed and designed to meet the varying needs of visitors. They boast fine linens, plush terry robes and the most divine feather beds!

For the ultimate in seclusion, The Honeysuckle is also an option while visiting the Markham House. Newly renovated, this quaint lodging is conveniently tucked away in a back section of the property. A garden trail leads to the country style cottage, where couples can enjoy the privacy of their own outdoor hot tub in the serene environment of the wooded hillside. A barbecue is available as well as cooking facilities, and we could imagine how relaxing it would be to spend more than one night here. Fir floors and country furnishings tastefully set the scene and a VCR stocked with movies is available to enjoy in front of the wood burning fire.

We had the pleasure of a night in The Garden Suite where sage and rose tones flow throughout, and delicate floral prints don the windows and comfy King bed. The special touches have all been considered. A port nightcap and an arrangement of fruits and sweets were waiting for us to enjoy. We loved the suite's additional amenities, the double Jacuzzi tub and glowing gas fire.

In the morning, a pot of fresh coffee was brought to our room and was later followed by a sensationally, sumptuous breakfast. Granola, fruit and fresh-out-of-the-oven and melt-in-your-mouth lemon-apricot scones started off the meal. Delectable French omelets that followed, were filled with our choice of onions, mushrooms and shrimp. They were delightfully presented, and complimented with sausage links and pan-fried potatoes.

We sat back following the meal, reading and enjoying the peaceful setting. So close to activities such as biking, hiking, water activities, Galloping Goose Trail, and whale watching, yet wonderfully removed to enhance the peace and rest we came here to find.
